Red wine and turmeric are two of the toughest everyday stains a countertop can face, and they are also two of the most common questions we get from Dallas homeowners comparing materials. We put popular countertop surfaces through a simple real world test: a splash left to sit, then cleaned on a normal schedule, to see how each material actually performs. We put quartz countertops and granite countertops through the same red wine and turmeric test to see how they really hold up in Dallas.

Quartz: Consistent Stain Resistance
Quartz is engineered with resin binders that make it non porous, so red wine and turmeric sat on the surface without soaking in during our test, as long as the spill was wiped within a reasonable window. This is one of the biggest practical advantages of quartz for busy kitchens where spills are not always caught immediately.
Granite: Good Performance When Sealed
Properly sealed granite performed well against both turmeric and red wine in our test, with minor discoloration only appearing where the spill was left far longer than any homeowner realistically would. Unsealed or under sealed granite is a different story, since the natural stone is porous and can pick up staining pigments more easily.
- Quartz resisted staining from both red wine and turmeric
- Sealed granite performed well with prompt cleanup
- Marble is the most prone to staining and etching of the three
- Quick cleanup matters more than the sealing schedule alone
Marble: Beautiful, But the Most Reactive
Marble showed the most visible reaction in our test. Turmeric left a faint yellow tint even after cleaning, and red wine etched the polished finish slightly where it sat. This does not mean marble is a poor choice, but it does mean homeowners in Dallas who love the look should plan for a more attentive care routine, prompt cleanup, and periodic resealing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long can red wine sit on quartz before it stains?
Quartz is highly stain resistant, but as a rule of thumb it is best to wipe up any spill within a few hours, since dyes and pigments can eventually affect even non porous surfaces if left long enough.
Does turmeric permanently stain granite?
Properly sealed granite typically resists turmeric staining if cleaned within a reasonable time, though unsealed granite is more vulnerable and should be sealed on a regular schedule.
What is the best way to remove a wine stain from marble in a Dallas kitchen?
A poultice made for natural stone, applied and left to draw out the stain, is generally the safest approach, and we can recommend a specific product or service if a stain does not lift with basic cleaning.
